Sony India today said it planned to boost its leadership status in the compact camera segment by taking its market share from 42% to 45% in the coming fiscal. The company, which at a Cyber-shot camera launch in Kochi, also said the new product was in sync with its global strategy of designing and creating innovative products that strengthened its brand identity.

The new camera for instance, is equipped with two new technologies — Sweep Panorama, which allows capturing ultra-wide pictures with a field view of up to 270 degrees, and High Definition Movie, which enables shooting high-resolution videos. “The introduction of Sweep Panorama and HD Movie technologies will ensure that a wider consumer audience would be able to experience Sony’s technologically superior products”, said Takakiyo Fujita, Sony India general manager of marketing.

The new Sony Cybershot T500 is a 10.1 megapixels camera that can shoot hi-def video clips. Its features include a 5X optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens, 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD, Double anti-blur technology and connectivity to an LCD or HD TV. The clips are recorded in PC-friendly Mpeg4 format and just in case you need to take a picture while taking a video a handy button does that for you, taking pics at 1280X720 pixel resolution without hindering the video being captured. The 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen lets you touch the screen to have the camera focus on that particular object and touching a face on the screen triggers face recognition, the Cybershot camera can track up to 8 faces. The T500 is available in 3 colours piano black, silver and red and will make its debut in European stores from October 2008. No word on price or Indian launch.

Straight from camera happy Japan, is this awesome contraption, an underwater digital camera mask that can be used to take pictures and video at a depth of up to 30 meters. The device sold by Liquid image for 75 Euro features a 3 or 5 Megapixel CMOS sensor, LCD screen, 16MB of memory with expansion through MicroSD (up to 2GB) and a USB port. Jump for a video.
